What to do when you’re not sure what to do
What to do when you’re not sure what to do
This book begins with lovely endpapers, depicting a little girl looking confused as she thinks about boarding the train. Then the journey of life begins as readers open the pages of this picture book.
There are so many questions and behaviours to comprehend, understand and decide what action to take. Davina Bell sensitively guides children into decision making, without being prescriptive or authoritarian. The beautiful illustrations provide the situations of decision-making and choice. Davina writes a simple line such as, ‘Gentle hands!’ while Hilary illustrates a girl touching a baby gently. When there is apprehension of the child getting on an escalator, Davina writes ‘A bigger step.’ Hilary illustrates an outstretched hand for the child to hold. They share humour too. ‘Even if you really want to. It might not be the best idea.’ Hilary illustrates scenes when the child jumps on the train seat, then launches onto her mother. You can nearly hear Davina and Hilary laugh out loud.
There is sound advice as Davina writes ‘If you go out and about, let someone know.’ Hilary illustrates a girl walking their dog with a parent looking concerned at the front gate. There are situations that encourage empathy, confidence, caution and so many wisdoms. Of course, the constant is ‘Except love.’ Hilary illustrates a grandma hugging the little girl.
